CornBelters Come Back to Defeat Bees

Normal, IL – The Normal CornBelters (6-6, 21-17) scored five unanswered runs in the last three innings to complete the comeback over the Burlington Bees (6-7, 17-21) by a final score of 5-4  at the Corn Crib on July 10.  Juan Fernandez (SCC) started the game off fast with a two run home run to right field to score Jace Figuereo (South Dakota State) and put Burlington up by two. The lead would stretch to 4-0 in the fifth as Johnnie Ankenbruck (Huntington) and Matthew Simmons (Wabash Valley) both scored on the same wild pitch. Riley Fuller (Evangel) was excellent on the mound through six innings, shutting the CornBelters out while striking out five batters. However, in the seventh, Jackson Stanek got Normal on the board with a solo home run to begin the inning. An error and two singles would fill the bases with nobody out. Ty Mikkelsen (Iowa) would come in and induce a groundball double play and a strikeout to keep the Bees lead at 4-2. In the eighth, Mikkelsen walked four batters to make it a one run game, but Jake Weissenberger (Mount Mercy) left the bases loaded with a strikeout. Burlington had many chances to add runs in the late innings but couldn't and the CornBelters would make them pay as four consecutive guys reached with one out to walk it off.

The season series between the Bees and CornBelters will end in a 3-3 tie. Burlington returns home tomorrow to take on the Danville Dans with first pitch set for 6:30 pm at Community

Field.
