Bees Hold on to Snap Losing Streak
Alton, IL – The Bees never trailed as they scored enough in the late innings to take an 8-6 win at
Lloyd Hopkins Field on June 9.
Burlington got off to a quick start, leading after the third batter of the game when Tanner
Reinartz (Huntington) doubled home Juan Fernandez (SCC). They would add three more in the
top of the second, as Lucas Krebs (Illinois) and Fernandez each recorded RBIs. Krebs would
score the third run of the inning on an errant pickoff throw to make the score 4-0.
Alton would immediately respond in the bottom half of the inning, plating three runs on four
doubles to cut the lead to one.
Burlington would bump the lead back up to two in the third after Reinartz singled in Kole
Sonnenburg (Mount Mercy).
That 5-3 score held until the bottom of the fifth when Alton scored one on a two out single to
make it a one run game once again.
Burlington would answer in the sixth with a run of their own after Kila Teixeira (Hawaii Pacific)
began the inning with a double and scored on a Foti Rigopoulos (Illinois) single to push the
score to 6-4.
Alton would tie the score at six in the seventh after two walks, an error, and a wild pitch.
The Bees went on to score one run in the eighth and ninth innings. With two outs in the eighth
and Sonnenburg on second base, Krebs popped a ball up in the infield which dropped as two
River Dragon infielders let it fall between them. The lead was extended after Austin Mallee
(Gateway CC) homered to left in the ninth.
Jake Weissenberger (Mount Mercy) picked up his second save of the season after striking out
three batters in a scoreless ninth. Zach Troxel (Indiana Wesleyan) recorded the win for the
Bees. He pitched two scoreless innings out of relief of starting pitcher Tate Slagle (Iowa). Slagle
went six innings on the mound, the longest start of the season for a Bees pitcher.
Burlington's losing streak ends at four games. They improve to 5-8 and will be at Springfield
tomorrow night with first pitch set for 6:30 pm at Robin Roberts Stadium.
