SEVEN UNEARNED RUNS DOOM BEES IN 11-9 LOSS TO QUINCY
The Bees pounded out 11 hits and scored nine runs in Quincy Sunday evening, but poor defensive choices and two errors allowed the hard-hitting Doggy Paddlers to score seven unearned runs as Burlington fell 11-9. They stand at 4-8 on the season and have lost four straight contests.
The Bees scored first in the opening frame when Lucas Krebs led off with a line drive single to center. That ball was misplayed and Krebs wound up on third. He scored on a Kolt Kurzman infield single. PJ Hamel forced him at second. After a single from Trroy Peltz, Hamel would come around to score later in the inning on a ground out off the bat of Dalton Miler. 2-0 Bees.
Krebs ended up 3-5 in the game, had two RBI and scored four times. He was a double away from hitting for the cycle.
The Paddlers answered with 3 runs in the bottom of the first. A strikeout/passed ball allowed a runner to first. Consecutive singles off the Bees young starter Bryce Loker, drove home the first run. A single and a sacrifice fly scored the next two.
Now down 3-2, Burlington plated two more runs in the second. With one out Tate Slagle singled and came home ahead of a Krebs home run to left.
Quincy brought in 4 runs, 2 earned, in the home second on two hits, two walks, a hit batter and a wild pitch.
A two-out double and single chalked up another Paddler tally. Now 8-4 Quincy after three.
Following a scoreless fourth, Krebs singled and stole second. He moved to third on Kurzman's ground out, then scored on a single from Hamel.
The Bees gave up 3 more in the bottom of the fifth off reliever Ramzy Rodriguez to go down 11-5.
Burlington made a charge in the seventh drawing four walks and rapping out three hits to pull with two at 11-9. Slagle opened with a walk and a steal of second. Matthew Simmons walked to make it second and third. Krebs' grounder to the pitcher was thrown away and the base were loaded. Kurzman's single scored Slagle. Later Dalton Miller's two out infield single plated Krebs. The Bees got their final run when Milo Kelley singled to center scoring Peltz and Kurzman.
Kyle Prebil and Jack Cozzi shut down the Doggy Paddlers over their final three innings, but Burlington could not score again.
Loker took the loss. He is 0-1. Jonny Rossi, 1-0, was credited with the win.
The Bees are off Monday. They travel to Alton on Tuesday and Springfield on Wednesday before returning home.
